Johannesburg, 21 May 2025 – South Africa’s leading electric utility, Eskom, has taken a significant stride towards a sustainable future by announcing its plans to develop a pilot renewable green hydrogen facility. This initiative is part of Eskom’s broader decarbonisation strategy aimed at achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The Invitation To Tender has been issued for constructing this groundbreaking facility at Eskom’s Research, Testing, and Development unit in Johannesburg.

The Vision for Green Hydrogen

Green hydrogen, a cornerstone for a sustainable energy future, offers a clean, efficient, and versatile energy storage solution. It has the potential to revolutionize energy systems by providing a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Eskom’s pilot project will serve as a testing ground to explore the full potential of green hydrogen’s production, usage, and integration into the existing energy infrastructure.

Eskom’s Commitment to Decarbonisation

The pilot facility is an extension of Eskom’s ongoing efforts in decarbonisation, complementing their existing 400kW solar photovoltaic research pilot facility. With significant strides already made, such as the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Exxaro Resources, Eskom is committed to collaboration on strategic initiatives focused on carbon emissions reduction and improving air quality.

Understanding Hydrogen’s Full Value Chain

Eskom’s Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane, emphasized the importance of this pilot project. “This is about harnessing clean energy for inclusive economic growth. The pilot facility will help our research teams understand hydrogen’s full value chain, from production to use, and ensure we’re ready to play a leading role in the transition responsibly and inclusively,” he stated.

A Technological Leap Forward

The development of this Renewable Hydrogen Facility (RHF) is not just about testing new technology; it’s about building knowledge and skills necessary for future energy solutions. By understanding the legislative requirements and regulatory landscape, Eskom aims to pave the way for smoother adoption and integration of green hydrogen technologies.

Towards a Diverse Energy Mix

Eskom’s strategy revolves around maintaining a balanced energy mix to ensure long-term energy security. While the utility continues to operate its existing coal and nuclear assets, it is equally focused on integrating cleaner technologies such as gas, renewables, battery storage, and hydrogen to address the growing electricity demand sustainably.

Eskom Research Business Unit: At the Forefront of Innovation

Eskom’s Research, Testing, & Development (RT&D) unit is central to the company’s innovation drive, focusing on technology solutions that enhance operations and emissions management. With a pipeline of 2GW of clean energy projects by 2026 and over 20GW in development, Eskom aims to diversify the energy system, attract investment, and create long-term value for all South Africans.

A Collaborative Future

Eskom’s involvement in the South African Hydrogen Society Roadmap underlines its commitment to collaborative efforts for a sustainable future. By continuing to pursue a combination of technology-led solutions and strategic partnerships, Eskom is set to transform South Africa’s energy landscape, ensuring it remains competitive and sustainable in the global arena.

Opinion

Eskom’s initiative to develop a pilot Renewable Hydrogen Facility signifies a substantial commitment to sustainable development and a cleaner, greener future. By investing in green hydrogen research and development, Eskom is not only positioning itself as a leader in sustainable energy innovation but also contributing significantly to South Africa’s environmental and economic transformation. As Eskom embarks on this new journey, the eyes of the world are on South Africa as it leads the pivot towards renewable energy solutions and decarbonisation efforts.
